Ngidi returns as Capitals bat first; Super Kings bring in Hosein and Gurjapneet

Delhi, 5 May 2026 – Delhi Capitals won the toss and, after a brief chat in the middle, Axar Patel decided to bat. A simple hunch, he explained on TV, is that the surface will slow as the evening wears on. “It looked a touch dry and might grip later,” he noted, preferring to get runs on the board rather than leave a chase to chance.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was relaxed about losing the toss. The Chennai Super Kings skipper pointed to the same dry patches and suggested the ball “may not come on” in the second half anyway, so his bowlers are happy to have first go with a slightly newer pitch. Overnight drizzle in Delhi, plus a short afternoon shower, was the only real unknown.

Delhi’s XI is back to full strength. South African quick Lungi Ngidi, who missed two matches with a sore ankle, replaces Kyle Jamieson. There is a second change: Karun Nair slots in at No. 3, pushing Sameer Rizvi to the Impact Player list.

Chennai, forced into a shuffle after Ramakrishna Ghosh picked up a side strain, welcome left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein and left-arm seamer Gurjapneet Singh. Both offer variety on a deck expected to slow, Hosein’s ability to dart the ball in making him a decent Powerplay option.

Teams:

Delhi Capitals: KL Rahul (wk), Pathum Nissanka, Karun Nair, Tristan Stubbs, Nitish Rana, Axar Patel (capt), Ashutosh Sharma, Lungi Ngidi, Mitchell Starc, Kuldeep Yadav, T Natarajan. Impact subs: Vipraj, Sameer Rizvi, Abishek Porel, Auqib, Dwayne Miller.

Chennai Super Kings: Sanju Samson (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad (capt), Urvil Patel, Kartik Sharma, Dewald Brevis, Jamie Overton, Akeal Hosein, Noor Ahmad, Anshul Kamboj, Mukesh Chowdhary, Gurjapneet Singh. Impact subs: Shivam Dube, Ajay Veer, Matt Short, Akash Madhwal, Sarfaraz Khan.

Early strike-friendly weather, two fresh seamers and a surface likely to take spin later – all the basic ingredients for a balanced contest. As Gaikwad quietly summed up, “Whichever side adapts first will control the night.”
