Ollie Pope Unfazed by Media Speculation, Focused on Test Success

England’s vice-captain, Ollie Pope, is unfazed by the chatter surrounding his spot in the team and the return of Jacob Bethell. Despite pre-match speculations, Pope proved his worth with a commanding 171 in England’s swift victory over Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge.

Pope’s performance came under the spotlight when Ben Stokes’ comments about Bethell’s return from the IPL hinted at possible changes in the line-up that might impact Pope or Zak Crawley. Stokes later clarified that Bethell rejoining the squad was an obvious choice, criticising the media coverage for suggesting otherwise. He defended Pope, believing there was an unfair narrative against him.

Following these events, Pope showed his class with the bat, effectively ensuring his place at number three for the upcoming series against India. Reflecting on the situation, Pope shared, “Whenever I do media now I get asked if I’m reading what’s in the media,” explaining his focus on scoring runs rather than feeding into speculation. “Trying not to let it affect me in the Test match week… and hopefully cash in when it counts.”

Regarding Bethell’s squad return, Pope added with a smile, “It’ll be good to have him back in the squad and the selectors can make their decision, and I will try to score my runs.”

Pope’s self-assurance isn’t new. Throughout his career, he has faced questions about his optimal role and secure position in the team. His recent stint at number three, where he averages an impressive 43.06, seems to be where he belongs.

Stokes certainly agrees, firmly backing his vice-captain, saying, “He’s my vice-captain, and he’s been incredible for me at number three and the team.”

Pope acknowledges the different roles he’s undertaken but sees them as part of his growth. Over the past year, he’s juggled batting positions and even captained four Tests. “I’ve been trying to work on my all-round game and everything that will make me successful in Test cricket,” Pope stated, highlighting his adaptability and readiness to meet the team’s needs.

His diligent approach and mindset, focusing primarily on his batting at number three, continue to serve him and England well as they prepare for future challenges.
