Overton back for CSK as Gaikwad sends RCB in on fresh Chinnaswamy surface

A change of luck at the toss – at last. After calling wrong twice in a row (and losing twice), Ruturaj Gaikwad finally saw the coin fall his way and wasted no time in asking Royal Challengers Bengaluru to bat first. “Looks a good wicket but there should be a bit of help early on,” he said during the television interview. He also gave the update everyone in yellow wanted: “MS is moving nicely; the calf is settling.”

Jamie Overton’s name on the team sheet was the other welcome sight for Chennai Super Kings. The tall English all-rounder, rested for the Punjab game, replaced Dewald Brevis, who is still nursing a side strain. It takes CSK back up to three overseas players – Matt Henry and Noor Ahmad the others – while West Indian spinner Akeal Hosein waits again. Local left-arm all-rounder Prashant Veer keeps his spot despite not bowling a ball last time out.

The power-hitting Kartik Sharma, the franchise’s ₹14.2 crore punt, remains on the Impact Sub bench alongside Matt Short. One of the pair is likely to appear once a target is known. “We’re comfortable with the flexibility the rule gives us,” batting coach Michael Hussey noted. “It lets us read conditions rather than guess them.”

Defending champions RCB see no reason to tinker after beating Sunrisers on opening night. Captain Rajat Patidar put it plainly: “Same XI, same roles. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.” Wrist-spinner Suyash Sharma, superb in the middle overs last season, is the obvious Impact option if the pitch slows.

Chinnaswamy surfaces can stay true for 40 overs, yet early swing often shapes the powerplay. Henry, who found movement in Chennai, expects something similar. “You get half an hour of nip here,” the New Zealander said. “Use it, or Kohli and Salt will hurt you.”

Both camps insist the new-ball passage is decisive, but the larger story is CSK’s hunt for a first win – and the steady rehabilitation of a certain 44-year-old keeper-batter. “We’d love to give MS a gentle comeback, not rush him,” Gaikwad added. A gentle comeback in front of 40,000 red shirts? This league rarely offers such kindness.
