Overton heads home as CSK’s injury list grows

Chennai Super Kings have lost another frontline player, with Jamie Overton flying back to the UK to have a right-thigh problem checked out. The club confirmed the departure late on Wednesday, saying: “Jamie Overton has a right thigh injury and will be returning to the UK for further assessment and management.”

It is the latest blow in a season that has felt like one long roll-call of the physio room. Overton, signed for his pace and lower-order hitting, sits second on CSK’s wicket chart – 14 at 17.78 – and was Player of the Match only two days ago, grabbing 3 for 36 in the five-wicket win over Lucknow. With three league fixtures left, a return looks optimistic at best.

Coach Stephen Fleming admitted before the last game that the group had been “patching things together”, and the situation has not eased. Australian seamer Nathan Ellis never got out of the blocks because of a hamstring tweak; Khaleel Ahmed (quad) and rookie quick Ramakrishna Ghosh (broken foot on debut) followed. Ayush Mhatre’s hamstring went shortly after, while Dewald Brevis missed the opening fortnight with a side strain. MS Dhoni and Spencer Johnson are fit, but neither has yet been used – a reminder of how strangely the season has unfolded.

Earlier on Wednesday, CSK announced Karnataka all-rounder Macneil Noronha as a replacement for Ghosh, only for the Overton news to land a few hours later. The timing was awkward rather than dramatic, yet it underlined a simple truth: the squad is running light.

Despite everything, the side sit fifth on 12 points, clinging to the play-off race. “Overton is a little under-rated as a player,” former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta said on TV, a remark that felt prophetic once the injury surfaced. Analyst Matt Roller added that the 32-year-old had “quietly reinvented himself in T20 – bowling a heavy length, hitting straight down the ground when required.”

For now, that reinvention pauses. Three matches remain: away at Lucknow on Friday, then Kolkata and Hyderabad. Win all three and the maths should look after itself. Do anything less and the medical bulletins may end up being the only CSK headlines left to write.
