Pandya bowls first; Dhoni and Rohit both missing in rare MI-CSK meeting

Hardik Pandya kept things simple at the toss at Wankhede, looked around, shrugged, and said his side would chase. “Looks green but it plays pretty well,” he noted, sounding more curious than concerned. It means Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings – five titles each – start tonight without either Rohit Sharma or MS Dhoni for the first time in the fixture’s long history.

Pandya resisted any temptation to tinker after beating Gujarat three nights ago. Rohit’s sore calf still needs a little longer, so Quinton de Kock keeps the gloves and the extra left-hand option at the top.

Across in the Super Kings dug-out, Ruturaj Gaikwad has plenty to ponder. His own runs have dried up and four defeats in six have left CSK just above Mumbai on net run-rate. R Ashwin, chatting on television earlier, put it bluntly: “Ruturaj must take initiative as captain.” The message is clear enough.

CSK have injuries of their own – Ayush Mhatre and Khaleel Ahmed are both watching in tracksuits – yet the only change on the sheet is a straight swap: all-rounder Kartik Sharma in for Matt Short. The management had hinted at a look for youngster Prashant Veer but his name appears only among the impact options.

Both camps agree the strip should quicken under lights, hence identical strategies: bowl first, chase later. Pandya got the call right, leaving Gaikwad to set things up with bat in hand.

Mumbai Indians XI
Quinton de Kock (wk), Naman Dhir, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya (capt), Sherfane Rutherford, Mitchell Santner, Krish Bhagat, Jasprit Bumrah, AM Ghazanfar, Ashwani Kumar

Chennai Super Kings XI

Impact subs: Prashant Veer, Matt Short, Matt Henry, Akeal Hosein, Urvil Patel

Two great brands, yes, but both sitting in the bottom half and both catching some flak for risk-averse cricket. Tonight offers a chance to shift the narrative – or sink a little deeper into mid-season trouble.
