Pandya bucks Wankhede trend, bats first; Jacks handed debut

Hardik Pandya walked out for the toss, won it, then did the one thing captains haven’t done at the Wankhede for three years: he chose to bat. In the previous 21 IPL matches at this ground, the skipper who called correctly had sent the opposition in.

Asked why he went against the grain, Pandya said the evening felt “breezy, slightly cold evening than usual” and he did not expect much dew. In other words, he fancied runs on the board.

Mumbai’s selection sheet needed almost as much explanation. Rohit Sharma’s hamstring is still not ready—Pandya reckons the former captain will “take a couple of more games” to recover—while Quinton de Kock is out with a sore wrist. Mitchell Santner’s tournament is over after a shoulder injury. That cleared space for South Africa’s Ryan Rickelton and England’s Will Jacks, who are set to open together. Young wicketkeeper-batter Robin Minz also gets his first run of the season, and Trent Boult returns to the starting XI. Either Shardul Thakur or uncapped seamer Krish Bhagat is likely to appear later as the Impact Player.

Pat Cummins, captaining a Sunrisers Hyderabad side riding a four-match winning streak, admitted he would have bowled anyway and was happy enough to chase on what he called a slightly tacky surface. Expecting the pitch to grip early but perhaps skid on later, SRH opted for left-arm finger-spinner Harsh Dubey over wrist-spinner Shivang Kumar. Left-arm quick Aniket Verma is on standby as their Impact option.

Sunrisers start the night fourth with ten points; victory would lift them above the mid-table congestion. Mumbai, by contrast, sit ninth with just two wins from seven and have lost three of four at home, including that sobering 103-run defeat to Chennai Super Kings. A confidence-building total is therefore more than a statistical anomaly—it feels a necessity.

Probable XIs
Mumbai Indians: Ryan Rickelton (wk), Will Jacks, Naman Dhir, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya (capt), Robin Minz, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, AM Ghazanfar, Ashwani Kumar. Impact subs: Shardul Thakur/Krish Bhagat.

Sunrisers Hyderabad: Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan (wk), Heinrich Klaasen, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Salil Arora, Pat Cummins (capt), Harsh Dubey, Eshan Malinga, Praful Hinge, Sakib Hussain. Impact sub: Aniket Verma.

Key numbers
• Last side to bat first after winning the toss at Wankhede: Kolkata Knight Riders, April 2023.
• MI have taken just four Powerplay wickets this season, the joint-fewest in the league.
• SRH’s top three average a shade under ten overs together per innings—continuity Pandya’s bowlers will be desperate to break.

A fresh script tonight, then: new openers, a left-field decision at the toss, and two teams with plenty on the line.
