Hard facts first
India look set to welcome Hardik Pandya back into the T20I side when the selectors meet in Raipur on Wednesday to finalise the squad for the five-match series against South Africa, starting 9 December in Cuttack. Shubman Gill, the designated vice-captain in this format, remains an uncertain starter as he continues rehab for a pinched nerve in his neck.
Pandya’s fitness tick
Pandya returned to competitive cricket on Tuesday, steering Baroda past Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with 77* and figures of 1-52 from four overs. A support-staff member who watched the game noted, “He bowled his quota without discomfort, which is what the medical team wanted to see.” The all-rounder had been out since the Asia Cup in September with a left-quadriceps strain.
Gill’s race against the clock
Gill injured his neck during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata and has not played since. A physio familiar with the case said, “It’s essentially a pinched nerve. He needs the full five-week rest before we even talk about batting volume.” Gill checked into the BCCI’s National Cricket Centre in Bengaluru on Monday. If unavailable, India must choose a new opener to partner Abhishek Sharma.
Opening options
Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the leading contenders. Samson toured Australia last month but faced only seven balls in two appearances. Jaiswal was not part of that squad yet remains highly rated by the coaching group. A selector remarked, “We know Sanju can float, and Yashasvi gives us a left-hand option. It’s about balance, not just numbers.”
Riyan Parag back in the mix
Riyan Parag, currently captaining Assam in the Mushtaq Ali, is also under consideration for the 15-player list. The 24-year-old last played a T20I in 2024 and offers a middle-order batting and leg-spin package. “He’s learnt to finish games this domestic season,” said former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan on television. “That extra bowling option won’t hurt either.”
Series schedule
The T20Is follow the ongoing ODI leg, which ends on 6 December:
• 1st T20I – 9 Dec, Cuttack
• 2nd – 11 Dec, New Chandigarh
• 3rd – 14 Dec, Dharamsala
• 4th – 17 Dec, Lucknow
• 5th – 19 Dec, Ahmedabad
Context and rankings
Suryakumar Yadav continues as captain with India top of the ICC T20I rankings; South Africa sit fifth. “Rankings won’t matter once the new-ball swings,” South Africa coach Rob Walter reminded reporters last week, “but we do respect the depth India have at home.”
What the return means
Pandya’s comeback, if confirmed, gives India the seam-bowling all-rounder they missed during the 3-2 win over Australia in October–November. Batting coach Vikram Rathour said earlier in that series, “The extra balance lets us play the match-up game without weakening either department.”
Concerns remain over workload. A senior trainer pointed out, “Hardik’s overs will be managed carefully. Four in T20Is are fine; Tests are another debate.” Pandya himself kept it simple after Tuesday’s win: “Good to be on the park again. I’ve missed this.”
Gill’s absence would be a blow, though the selectors are keen not to rush him. “You don’t compromise a 26-year-old’s long-term health for one series,” a board official stressed.
Imperfect but promising
India’s likely 15 still has moving parts – chiefly Gill’s recovery and one spare fast-bowling slot. Yet Pandya’s timely return eases at least one headache. As the support-staff member put it, “We’d rather have Hardik in the dressing-room than on the physio table.”
