Pandya recalled for South Africa T20Is; Gill included subject to fitness

Hardik Pandya is back in India’s T20I squad after more than two months on the sidelines, while Shubman Gill has been selected as vice-captain, provided he passes a final fitness test at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.

The five-match series begins in Cuttack on 9 December, followed by fixtures in New Chandigarh, Dharamsala, Lucknow and Ahmedabad. Suryakumar Yadav continues as stand-in captain.

Key facts first
• Pandya returns after an ankle injury suffered in the Asia Cup final on 28 September.
• Gill is recovering from the neck strain that ruled him out of the Kolkata Test; his availability will be confirmed closer to the opener.
• Rinku Singh and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, both unused on the recent Australian tour, have been omitted.
• Jasprit Bumrah leads the pace unit, with Arshdeep Singh and uncapped seamer Harshit Rana offering support.
• Two wicketkeepers—Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma—are included, offering flexibility at the top of the order.

Why Pandya’s back matters
India’s T20I balance looked thin in Australia without the 30-year-old all-rounder. In his comeback for Baroda in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on Tuesday, Pandya bowled four overs (1-52) and then struck an unbeaten 77 from 42 deliveries—seven fours, four sixes—to chase down 199 against Punjab. That single outing convinced selectors he was fit enough to play a full part in South Africa.

Selectors’ view
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said in the release, “Hardik has met all the fitness markers we set. He adds depth with both bat and ball, so it was a straightforward recall.” On Gill, Agarkar added, “We’ll give Shubman every chance to prove his readiness. The medical team is optimistic.”

Batting permutations
If Gill is ruled out, Samson is the likeliest to open with Abhishek Sharma, mirroring Kerala’s domestic set-up. Samson’s only innings in Australia came at No. 3 in Melbourne, a brief 19 before rain intervened. Tilak Varma retains his middle-order slot after a steady Australian tour.

Spin and seam options
Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy provide contrasting wrist-spin, with Washington Sundar and Axar Patel covering off-spin and left-arm orthodox respectively. Bumrah remains the spearhead; Arshdeep’s left-arm angle and Rana’s hit-the-deck pace complete the fast-bowling group.

Rinku and Reddy miss out
Rinku’s absence will raise eyebrows after his Asia Cup heroics, but he managed only one wash-out appearance in Australia and has been short of time in the middle. Reddy, uncapped internationally, was always vulnerable once Pandya regained fitness.

Series context
South Africa have already claimed the Test series 2-0, while India lead the ODIs 1-0 going into the Raipur match. The T20Is will therefore decide limited-overs bragging rights before both sides shift focus to next year’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and USA.

India squad: Suryakumar Yadav (capt), Shubman Gill (vice-capt), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Washington Sundar.
Subject to fitness clearance from BCCI CoE.

The first ball is due in ten days; fitness updates on Gill, and perhaps a final word on Pandya’s bowling workload, will be watched closely.
