Mumbai – Hardik Pandya called correctly and, without hesitation, chose to bowl in Mumbai Indians’ opening IPL 2026 fixture against Kolkata Knight Riders. The Wankhede Stadium, rarely shy of runs, appeared greener than usual, a detail both captains noted long before the national anthems.
Three new faces apiece
Pandya’s decision handed immediate responsibility to a trio of MI debutants. Afghanistan’s mystery spinner AM Ghazanfar, seamer-all-sorts Shardul Thakur and West Indian hitter Sherfane Rutherford all received their first blue caps. Across the white line, KKR matched them for fresh names: New Zealand opener Finn Allen, Zimbabwe quick Blessing Muzarabani and Australia’s Cameron Green (back at his old franchise, yet still uncapped for the Knight Riders) joined Ajinkya Rahane’s XI.
Key selections
MI paired Rohit Sharma with Ryan Rickelton at the top, preferring the left-hander’s 388 runs last season to Quinton de Kock’s reputation. Trent Boult completed the overseas quota, leaving Will Jacks and Mitchell Santner to wait for paperwork or flights. Jasprit Bumrah heads a pace group also featuring Thakur and Boult; Mayank Markande joins Ghazanfar for the spin overs. Suryakumar Yadav, omitted from the starting XI, is expected to appear as Impact Player if batting muscle is required.
For KKR, Rahane backed youth behind the stumps, handing the gloves to Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Veteran Sunil Narine remains the all-purpose option, while Kartik Tyagi looms as their likely Impact choice.
Captains’ view
“Looks like a good track, looks a bit greener than it is used to, so let’s see,” Pandya said at the toss. “This is our fortress, this is our ground, and we hope we can entertain the crowd. We started a couple of weeks earlier, and the boys have got enough time to prepare.”
Rahane, asked about the surface, admitted he had “never seen so much of grass at Wankhede”. His words hinted at early swing for Boult and Bumrah, and perhaps greater relevance for Muzarabani’s extra bounce later in the evening.
Head-to-head snapshot
History leans heavily Mumbai’s way: 24 wins from 35 outings against KKR, including 10-2 at this venue. That dominance has, however, softened; the Knight Riders lead 2-1 at the Wankhede since 2024. Form guides, then, are helpful but hardly definitive.
Tactical threads to watch
• New ball: Boult shape versus Allen’s attacking intent may set the tone.
• Mystery spin: Ghazanfar, an unknown quantity in the IPL, could be held back for Green or Rinku Singh.
• Impact Player timing: With grass on the pitch, both sides might delay their extra batter until dew arrives.
Line-ups

First ball is moments away. On a grassy Wankhede, that alone qualifies as unusual; how both teams manage their new personnel may matter just as much.
