Riyan Parag has gone under the knife to repair his troublesome right shoulder and now begins what he calls a “different challenge – recovery, rehab and patience”.
The 24-year-old all-rounder confirmed the procedure on Instagram early on Thursday, writing: “For everyone who’s been asking, the surgery is done and went well. The past two years have tested me in ways I never expected. There were good days, frustrating days, and days when simply getting through a game was a challenge. But I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.” He rounded off the message with a promise to supporters: “I’ll be back doing what I love soon. See you on the other side.”
Parag’s shoulder has been a background worry since IPL 2025, though he managed the pain in consultation with BCCI medical staff. Surgery was always on the table, but doctors felt it could wait until the problem started to hinder performance. That point, by Parag’s own admission, arrived during this season’s IPL.
Even so, he kept going for Rajasthan Royals. A tight hamstring forced him to skip one league game against Lucknow Super Giants, yet he rushed back – still short of full fitness – for the must-win match against Mumbai Indians. He then turned out in both the Eliminator and Qualifier 2, often grimacing while scampering between the wickets.
The hamstring flare-up cost him a place – and the vice-captaincy – with India A in the current one-day tri-series in Sri Lanka, where Ruturaj Gaikwad stepped in. Now it is the shoulder, not the leg, that dominates the schedule. Precise timelines remain unclear, although players with similar procedures typically require between eight and 12 weeks before resuming batting and fielding drills in earnest.
A senior Royals physio, speaking on background to local media, described the outlook as “encouraging” and praised Parag’s decision to tackle the issue head-on rather than “paper over it for another season”.
India’s domestic calendar should give the all-rounder enough room to build back gradually, though selection for the early-season white-ball tours looks a stretch. For now, the player appears philosophical: “Now comes a different challenge – recovery, rehab and patience.”
Supporters will count that as progress; at least the nagging question over surgery has been settled, and Parag can focus on getting fully fit rather than merely getting through games.
