Parking-lot blaze briefly halts attention, not play, at Boland Park

A small fire in the car park at Boland Park diverted eyes from the SA20 meeting between Paarl Royals and Pretoria Capitals on Saturday, yet cricket carried on without delay or injury.

Ground staff noticed flames on the western side of the venue during the fourth over of the Royals’ chase. Local firefighters were already stationed nearby because of regional wildfire warnings and reached the spot in minutes. By the seventh over the blaze was out, leaving a patch of scorched grass and a handful of shaken car owners.

“We saw smoke and acted straight away,” Boland Park facilities manager Johan Swart said. “The priority was public safety; fortunately, nothing and nobody was harmed.”

Spectators remained in their seats, though a few headed outside to check vehicles. The umpires consulted match referee Shaid Wiese but agreed conditions were safe enough to continue. Capitals batter Will Jacks, fielding near the boundary at the time, later remarked: “You could smell burning rubber but visibility stayed fine, so we just got on with it.”

Officials believe a discarded cigarette or a faulty battery could be to blame. Importantly, they ruled out any link to the larger mountain wildfires that have blanketed much of the Cape Winelands in haze since mid-week. Those fires, fanned by hot, dry winds, have scorched thousands of hectares around Franschhoek and Stellenbosch and were already drifting smoke over the ground before first ball.

Wildfires are a grim staple of Western Cape summers. Vegetation is tinder-dry after scant spring rain, and gusting southeasters accelerate any spark. Cricket South Africa and the SA20 league now place additional emergency crews at outdoor venues between December and February – a policy introduced after power lines ignited bush near Newlands during a domestic match in 2021.

Former Proteas quick Morne Morkel, who lives nearby, offered perspective on SuperSport commentary: “You never relax when the hills go up. The good news is Cape fire services are well drilled these days.”

Play concluded under a smoky twilight, Royals sealing victory with five balls to spare. For once, though, the louder cheer in Paarl was reserved for the fire brigade’s swift work rather than a towering six.
