Matheesha Pathirana, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fast bowler, was a standout performer in 2023 with 19 wickets in 12 matches and an economical record. However, the IPL 2024 saw Pathirana side-lined by a hamstring injury, and in 2025, his form hasn’t quite hit the same heights, with just nine wickets in eight games and an economy rate soaring to 10.40.
The reason? A change in his bowling action, as pointed out by CSK’s bowling consultant Eric Simons after their recent elimination. “There was a bit of [an] action change,” Simons noted, following their loss to Punjab Kings, indicating that Pathirana is close to returning to his best. “His arm height is more consistent now,” he added, suggesting improvement.
Head coach Stephen Fleming highlighted that the change seemed to originate during Pathirana’s stint in South Africa earlier this year, possibly due to interventions by Sri Lanka Cricket. “He was way off there,” explained Fleming, questioning the national cricket board’s influence. “We’ll work on getting him back to his peak,” he assured. Pathirana has made significant strides recently, further evidenced by Fleming’s comment, “It’s part of his evolution.”
Pathirana’s difficult encounter against the Mumbai Indians highlighted ongoing struggles. Bowling at the Wankhede Stadium, he was targeted by Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, ending with figures of 1.4-0-34-0.
Simons reiterated that Pathirana remains accurate. “Batsmen are adapting to him,” Simons observed. “The technique has shifted, particularly noticeable against Mumbai,” he continued. “Tactically, he needs to evolve just like the batsmen do.”
Acknowledging the challenge, Simons said, “His lines were good. Full length is better, but batsmen are treating him differently this year,” emphasising that it’s not solely about inaccuracies.
Against the Punjab Kings, Pathirana managed to dismiss Nehal Wadhera and Shreyas Iyer but conceded 45 runs across his four overs. As Simons aptly put it, “It’s a feel thing for him,” something Pathirana and CSK will certainly look to refine moving forward.
