Phil Salt is set to skip England’s T20I series against West Indies, choosing to embark on paternity leave after a whirlwind week that saw him dash to the IPL 2025 final. Just days earlier, he travelled back to the UK for the birth of his first child.
The 28-year-old cricketer made a rapid return to India after his team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), won the IPL Qualifier 1 against Punjab Kings. Following the birth of his son, Salt arrived in Ahmedabad in the early hours of Tuesday and played in the IPL final that night. He contributed 16 runs off nine balls and showcased his fielding skills with a stunning catch, helping RCB secure their first IPL title after 18 attempts. It marked Salt’s second consecutive triumph, following his victory with Kolkata Knight Riders the previous season.
Mo Bobat, RCB’s director of cricket, lauded Salt’s “unbelievable” dedication, while teammate Virat Kohli humorously remarked on Instagram, “Now go back to the real stuff and get ready for changing diapers.”
Reflecting on RCB’s victory, Salt expressed, “It’s an unbelievable feeling right now. I’ll be honest with you, I don’t quite know where I am at the minute. I’ve not had the most sleep, but [I’m] so proud of the boys.” When asked about his newborn bringing luck, he added, “He did. I’ve got a lucky charm now. I’m over the moon.”
Salt’s availability for the IPL playoffs followed his omission from England’s ODI squad due to a recent dip in form, notably during the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Jamie Smith replaced him at the top of the order and will now join the T20I squad for the West Indies series.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed Salt’s absence, stating he had been “granted permission to withdraw” to spend time with his newborn. The series, starting on Friday in Durham, might see Tom Banton stepping up as he was previously England’s extra batter during their 3-0 ODI series victory.
Phil Salt’s decision to prioritise family at this stage is universally respected, and his teammates will undoubtedly aim to handle his absence effectively.
For cricket fans interested in following further updates, the series promises exciting opportunities for rising talents.
