Pollard takes MI Emirates reins for December’s ILT20 return

MI Emirates have turned to familiar hands, naming Kieron Pollard skipper for the International League T20’s fourth edition, which starts in the UAE on 2 December.

Pollard, 38, joins the squad as a wildcard alongside fellow Trinidadian Nicholas Pooran, the man he replaces as captain. With the SA20 overlapping, Pooran is expected to divide his time between MI Cape Town and the Emirates side, prompting the change.

Few players bring Pollard’s volume of experience. The all-rounder has already featured in 720 T20 fixtures – more than anyone else – scoring 14,237 runs at a strike rate of 151.23. Another 326 runs would see him overtake Chris Gayle at the top of the format’s run-scorers list.

The West Indian will work with head coach Robin Singh, who said the leadership switch felt natural. “Kieron knows the MI set-up inside out and the group responds to him,” Singh noted in a team release. “That understanding should serve us well during a short, intense tournament.”

Pollard echoed the sentiment, stating, “I’ve always relished responsibility. Leading this dressing-room is a privilege and a challenge I’m ready for.”

West Indian flavour extends beyond the captain. Andre Fletcher – the auction’s highest buy at USD 260,000 – joins seam-bowling all-rounder Romario Shepherd and young left-hander Ackeem Auguste. Afghanistan quick Fazalhaq Farooqi, England’s Chris Woakes and Jonny Bairstow, and Bangladesh veteran Shakib Al Hasan headline an eclectic overseas group.

The league runs across Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah, featuring six teams and 34 matches before the final on 4 January. MI Emirates open against reigning champions Gulf Giants in Dubai on 4 December.

Why the switch matters
Pollard’s track record suggests stability: a trophy-laden stint with Mumbai Indians and leadership experience in multiple leagues. His power-hitting remains a threat, yet his greater value may lie in in-game management – an asset for a competition played over little more than a month.

Pooran, free to focus on finishing duties with the bat and his commitments in South Africa, could still prove decisive. Balancing both tournaments will test schedules and bodies alike, a growing theme for modern T20 specialists.

For MI Emirates the equation is clear: blend Pollard’s nous with a bold, multi-national squad and challenge for a first ILT20 title.
