Ricky Ponting, the head coach of Punjab Kings (PBKS), believes Shreyas Iyer is demonstrating remarkable growth in his role as captain. Ponting, familiar with Iyer’s leadership from their time at Delhi Capitals (DC), notes the player’s increasing confidence since guiding Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to an IPL title last year.
“He’s a lot more confident in himself now than he was, and that comes with experience,” Ponting stated after PBKS’s victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk. “Winning the IPL as a captain last year gave him experience he trusts, especially crucial in a fast-paced T20 match.”
Ponting highlighted Iyer’s poise, even as challenges, like completing overs in time, occasionally test his calmness. Iyer’s strategic pairing between spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and MS Dhoni, who traditionally struggles against spin, proved effective. Chahal’s hat-trick in the 19th over played a significant role in turning the match in PBKS’s favour.
In the chase, Iyer scored a powerful 72 off 41 balls, a knock featuring five fours and four sixes. He showcased an ability to adapt, moving from 28 off 23 balls to a fifty in just 32 deliveries. “He understands the game and its scenarios better than ever,” Ponting praised. “He’ll be frustrated he didn’t finish the game himself, knowing how much he likes to be the one completing matches for the team.”
Both Ponting and the players appreciate Iyer’s communication style, which has cultivated a happy and productive team environment at PBKS.
Elsewhere, former cricketer Wasim Jaffer expressed surprise at PBKS employing Suryansh Shedge in the 16th over, costing 26 runs. However, he noted Iyer’s improvement against fast bowling, a weakness addressed through technical adjustments.
Overall, Iyer’s leadership and on-field decision-making continue to elevate PBKS’s performance this season.
