Raghuvanshi’s season over as concussion and finger break hit KKR plans

Kolkata Knight Riders will finish IPL 2026 without their most reliable run-scorer. Angkrish Raghuvanshi has been ruled out of the tournament after scans confirmed a concussion and a fracture to the little finger on his left hand, both picked up in Wednesday night’s tangle with team-mate Varun Chakravarthy against Mumbai Indians.

The incident came on the fifth ball of the 11th over. Tilak Varma miscued a slog off Chakravarthy, the ball swirling into the night sky between bowler and keeper. Chakravarthy tracked it carefully, hands set, only for Raghuvanshi – eyes also fixed upwards – to charge in. The two collided, Chakravarthy lost control of the catch as he hit the turf, and Raghuvanshi stayed down for several moments before receiving treatment.

He lasted until the 14th over before walking off and was soon replaced behind the stumps by reserve gloveman Tejasvi Dahiya. KKR’s chase of 148 then began one batter light: Manish Pandey stepped in at No. 3, while Dahiya became the official concussion substitute and later chipped 11 from 12 deliveries. KKR still crossed the line, but the bigger blow had already landed.

Raghuvanshi’s numbers show why the loss matters. In 13 matches he has collected 422 runs, five fifties included, topping the KKR charts for a second year running. “He’s been the glue for us,” head coach Chandrakant Pandit said on Thursday. “Losing him now is not ideal but player safety is non-negotiable.”

The medical update is straightforward. Concussion protocols rule him out for at least a week, the fractured finger several more. With only one league game left – Delhi Capitals at Eden Gardens on Sunday – and a playoff berth still hanging by a thread, there is no realistic path back this season.

KKR must beat Delhi and then watch other results, notably matches involving Rajasthan and Chennai, to sneak into the top four. “It’s simple: win well and hope,” skipper Shreyas Iyer admitted. “We’ll miss Angkrish, yet it’s on the rest of us to finish the job.”

Delhi, already eliminated, may play with freedom, so KKR have work to do. The side will consider elevating Venkatesh Iyer up the order, while Dahiya could keep the gloves if rahul Tripathi isn’t drafted in.

From Raghuvanshi’s perspective, the frustration is obvious, though there is solace in form shown and time available before the domestic season. For KKR, it is another reminder that campaigns can pivot on a single mis-timed sprint.
