Rajasthan Royals’ Season of Missed Opportunities

Rajasthan Royals (RR) have faced a challenging season in the IPL 2025, losing eight of their nine matches when chasing. Curiously, five of these defeats have been by margins of 11 runs or fewer. At times, they led the opposition, and even when they had to mount a comeback, they were still favourites going into the last few overs. However, targets consistently set above 200 proved strenuous.

Speaking candidly about the situation, Coach Rahul Dravid highlighted their bowling’s role in these struggles. “It’s been tough,” remarked Dravid on the middle order’s performance. “We’ve found ourselves in several good positions to win, yet haven’t been able to close the job. It’s like we’re always giving away an extra 15-20 runs with the ball. The lower-middle order just hasn’t clicked to deliver those crucial big shots.”

He continued, “There’s no point just blaming the batsmen. Our bowling hasn’t been up to scratch, we’re consistently chasing 200-220. It wasn’t a 220 pitch, more around 195-200.”

Dravid hinted at possibly overhauling the bowling unit before the next season. “While our openers have been starting well, finishing has been our issue. In the field, too, slight improvements could make a big difference. Losing all five of those close games isn’t something that should happen. With a year’s growth, our batting will naturally progress. The bowling, though, requires tangible improvements.”

On the middle order’s potential, Dravid remained optimistic: “This is really a quality middle order. Riyan (Parag), Dhruv (Jurel), Sanju (Samson)… they’re all high-calibre Indian players alongside an international talent. Riyan has shown excellent form and Dhruv impressed today. Hettie’s had a challenging season, but such is cricket.”

Dravid’s words reflect not only on the struggles but also on the potential within RR’s ranks. The hope is that, with strategic changes, fortunes might favour them more in the next season.
