Richard Thompson to Lead ECB Until 2028

Richard Thompson, who has served as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chair since 2022, has been reappointed to continue in his role until 2028. This decision comes after the board’s independent directors unanimously agreed to extend his tenure.

Originally appointed for a five-year term, Thompson’s role was extended following a vote by ECB members to amend the board’s articles of association. The change means the chair now serves a three-year term, with the possibility of serving two consecutive terms.

The independent directors opted for an early confirmation of Thompson’s second term, set to last until September 2028. This move is designed to provide stability for the English game, particularly as the ECB progresses with selling stakes in the Hundred and prepares to host a Women’s T20 World Cup next year.

Katie Bickerstaffe, the ECB’s senior independent director who led the reappointment process, commented, “Richard is respected throughout the game. The board and the wider game are fully supportive of his agenda to become the most inclusive team sport, grow and unite the game, and to lead cricket through a period of global transformation.”

Thompson, previously the chair of Surrey, has been a key figure alongside ECB chief executive Richard Gould in the anticipated sale of equity in the Hundred, a deal expected to generate approximately £500 million for cricket.

Expressing his enthusiasm about the reappointment, Thompson stated: “I’m honoured to be able to continue serving the game I care so passionately about. Whether it’s growing participation and breaking down barriers or supporting our professional game and England teams, I’ll continue to work closely with our stakeholders to deliver a game that truly reflects and inspires our communities.
