Kemar Roach never made it to the warm-ups on Friday morning at Mount Maunganui. The 37-year-old quick had pulled up in the 89th over on day one, clutching his left hamstring, and the word from the dressing-room was simple: no chance of bowling on day two.
“He felt a sharp twinge high in the hammy and we’re not going to risk him,” West Indies physio Dennis Byam told the host broadcaster. “We’ll know more once the scans are in later today.”
That absence left a touring side already 1-0 down in the three-match series relying on Jayden Seales, Anderson Phillip and the part-time seam of Justin Greaves to work through New Zealand’s imposing first-innings position. Devon Conway quickly moved from 189 overnight to a double-hundred, underlining the size of the task.
As if losing their senior bowler was not enough, Shai Hope was confined to the team hotel with what team management called a “viral illness”. “I woke up feeling rough and the doc advised I stay away from the group,” Hope said in a short statement. His condition will be reviewed each morning.
Former Black Caps batter Craig McMillan, on television duty, summed it up neatly: “You pull one thread out of a bowling unit and it can unravel fast. Roach gives them control and experience, and without him it’s a very green attack.”
New Zealand know the feeling. Earlier in the series Matt Henry and Nathan Smith limped out of the Christchurch Test, while Blair Tickner lasted barely a session in Hamilton. Keeper-batter Tom Blundell also missed time with a minor hamstring strain but returned for this match. Ian Smith, on commentary, noted, “Both camps have had to juggle their seam stocks. It’s the modern game – fast bowlers are working overtime.”
West Indies have now lost six of their last seven World Test Championship fixtures, and a hefty first-innings total here would leave them scrapping for another backs-to-the-wall draw similar to Christchurch. Captain Kraigg Brathwaite chose not to dwell on that. “We still believe we can fight our way back,” he told local radio before play, “but we have to hit our areas and take the chances that come.”
For that to happen, Roach’s scans will need to bring unexpectedly good news, and Seales and company must find a way through Conway and an in-form New Zealand middle order – without much rest in sight.
