Rohit sidelined, Santner unwell – de Kock back as MI shuffle pack against Kings

Mumbai, 16 April 2026 – Punjab Kings’ skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss at a humid Wankhede and, quite sensibly, sent Mumbai Indians in on a ground that usually rewards the chasers. Moments earlier the home camp had confirmed two awkward absentees: Rohit Sharma (hamstring) and Mitchell Santner (illness).

Rohit pulled up in the previous match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and, as captain Hardik Pandya put it, “we’ll assess him in a couple of games’ time.” That uncertainty opened the door for Quinton de Kock, back in blue for his first outing of the season and, frankly, a welcome sight for MI supporters who remember his brisk power-play work.

With Santner unavailable the overseas balance more or less sorted itself. Mumbai handed an IPL debut to Delhi off-spinning all-rounder Mayank Rawat. The 22-year-old’s T20 numbers – strike-rate 123 with the bat, fewer than ten balls per game with the ball – suggest he is a work-in-progress, but the staff like his attitude. Left-arm quick Trent Boult was another notable omission from both XI and bench; management said nothing official, so we can only guess it is a niggle rather than a tactical axe.

Sherfane Rutherford kept his place, while mystery spinner AM Ghazanfar lurked as the probable Impact Player once Mumbai have a total to defend. Pandya admitted the bowling has been “a bit light on spin”, a point echoed on the TV build-up by Piyush Chawla and Aaron Finch. Both felt Mumbai lack a specialist slow option at the death, though Finch added that Jasprit Bumrah in form “covers a multitude of sins”.

Punjab, unbeaten so far, resisted any temptation to tinker. Iyer likes a settled side and a win tonight would take them clear at the top of the table. Marcus Stoinis, fresh from a bruising 64* two nights ago, again lines up in the middle order; Yuzvendra Chahal handles the bulk of the spin.

Squads

Mumbai Indians: 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Ryan Rickelton, 3 Tilak Varma, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Hardik Pandya (capt), 6 Sherfane Rutherford, 7 Naman Dhir, 8 Mayank Rawat, 9 Shardul Thakur, 10 Deepak Chahar, 11 Jasprit Bumrah
Bench: AM Ghazanfar, Corbin Bosch, Raj Bawa, Robin Minz, Ashwani Kumar

Punjab Kings: 1 Priyansh Arya, 2 Prabhsimran Singh (wk), 3 Cooper Connolly, 4 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 5 Shashank Singh, 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Marco Jansen, 8 Xavier Bartlett, 9 Vijaykumar Vyshak, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal
Bench: Nehal Wadhera, Vishnu Vinod, Harpreet Brar, Suyansh Shedge, Yash Thakur

Key points so far
• Rohit Sharma out with hamstring trouble; timeline uncertain.
• Mitchell Santner ill; Mayank Rawat debuts.
• Quinton de Kock returns, strengthening the top order.
• Kings unchanged, eyeing a fourth straight win.
• Surface looks even; dew expected later, bolstering Iyer’s call to chase.

Nothing flashy, then, just two sides trying to solve immediate puzzles – Mumbai searching for balance without their talisman and senior spinner, Punjab aiming to keep the momentum ticking over in a long tournament where early points rarely hurt.
