Royals chase under overcast skies as Hetmyer, Bishnoi sit out

Rajasthan Royals skipper Riyan Parag won the toss in New Chandigarh and, spotting thick clouds above, chose to chase Punjab Kings. “There’s a cloud cover and little showers as well,” he explained, keeping the reasoning plain.

Two changes followed that decision. Power-hitter Shimron Hetmyer makes way for Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka, while young leg-spinner Yash Raj Punja replaces Ravi Bishnoi. Hetmyer’s lean run – an average of 14.40 this season – probably nudged the call, though Parag kept that part to himself.

Opposite number Shreyas Iyer admitted he would have done the same had the coin fallen his way, noting that the “wicket was covered for a couple of days”. Kings, unbeaten so far, tweak their XI for the first time in this IPL. Suryansh Shedge steps in for Shashank Singh and Lockie Ferguson gets his first outing of the campaign, pushing Xavier Bartlett to the reserves.

Iyer also paused to offer “heartfelt condolences” to team-mate Azmatullah Omarzai, who has returned home after the loss of his mother – a reminder that the tournament rolls on around real-life moments.

Form guide

• Punjab have six wins and a wash-out, including that record 265-run chase with seven balls spare – remarkable but not, the camp insists, a license to relax.
• Rajasthan began with four straight wins, stuttered twice, steadied against Lucknow, then slipped against Sunrisers three nights ago. Consistency, or the lack of it, feels key.

Teams

Rajasthan Royals: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Riyan Parag (c), Donovan Ferreira, Dasun Shanaka, Ravindra Jadeja, Jofra Archer, Brijesh Sharma, Nandre Burger, Yash Raj Punja.
Impact subs: Ravi Bishnoi, Ravi Singh, Tushar Deshpande, Shubham Dubey, Shimron Hetmyer.

Punjab Kings: Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh (wk), Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer (c), Nehal Wadhera, Marcus Stoinis, Suryansh Shedge, Marco Jansen, Lockie Ferguson, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal.
Impact subs: Vishnu Vinod, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Xavier Bartlett, Harpreet Brar, Musheer Khan.

Why it matters

A win keeps Kings’ flawless run intact and edges them closer to a top-two berth. Royals, four points back, can tighten the table and erase the memory of their Hyderabad defeat. Either way, the forecast – both weather and form – suggests movement.
