Royals elect to chase in Hyderabad as both sides shuffle their seam attacks

Riyan Parag won the toss on a sun-baked afternoon and, without hesitation, put Sunrisers Hyderabad in. “We’ll bowl first,” he told the host broadcaster, keeping things simple on a surface that looked hard but carried the promise of evening dew.

Rajasthan, unbeaten so far, have resisted the urge to tinker all season. Even so, two adjustments felt sensible after a tight turnaround. South African batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius replaces the “rested” Shimron Hetmyer, while Tushar Deshpande comes in for Brijesh Sharma to bolster the pace unit. Pretorius, 22, has been striking the ball cleanly in the nets; Deshpande offers a heavy length and the knack of bowling through the middle overs, something Royals have occasionally lacked.

Sunrisers, by contrast, are searching for a spark after back-to-back defeats. Captain Ishan Kishan has turned to two debutant quicks, Sakib Hussain and Praful Hinge, leaving out the experienced Harshal Patel and Jaydev Unadkat. Hussain, a bustling right-armer from Bihar, will share the new ball with left-armer Eshan Malinga. Hinge, Vidarbha-born, is expected to operate at the death alongside Shivang Kumar. “Both lads have earned their caps through hard domestic yards,” assistant coach Simon Helmot said in the lead-up. “They won’t be overawed.”

The surface at Uppal has played quicker this season, producing an average first-innings score of 185. With Royals’ array of finishers and Jofra Archer’s hostility up front, Parag’s decision to bowl feels logical. Yet much hinges on how Sunrisers’ new-look attack handles Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel in the powerplay.
