Samson back at the top, fit-again Bumrah replaces Siraj after Namibia opt to chase

Gerhard Erasmus won the toss in Delhi and, amid plenty of cheers from a crowd who had queued since breakfast, asked India to bat first. The Namibia skipper reckoned that a bit of evening dew might slide the ball on later, making life simpler for his own batting group.

India have juggled things around again. Jasprit Bumrah is over the bout of illness that kept him out of the USA match and comes straight in for Mohammed Siraj. Abhishek Sharma, only discharged from hospital on Wednesday after a stomach bug, sits this one out, so the door swings open for Sanju Samson. As former seamer Varun Aaron put it on the TV build-up, “A big opportunity for Samson.” Co-panellist Yash Jha nodded along in agreement.

Washington Sundar, who netted on Wednesday after shaking off a rib complaint, remains on the sidelines for now; the selectors have resisted the temptation to tweak the all-round options any further.

Namibia, beaten by the Netherlands last time, have moved the pieces too. Ben Shikongo’s extra pace is preferred to the leg-spin of Willem Myburgh, while Malan Kruger comes in for Dylan Leicher in the middle order. The visitors effectively go with two quicks plus JJ Smit and the left-arm spin of Bernard Scholtz, which feels like their best balance, albeit on a surface that can flatten out under lights.

Teams
India: Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan (wk), Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (capt), Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy.

Namibia: Louren Steenkamp, Jan Frylinck, Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton, Gerhard Erasmus (capt), JJ Smit, Zane Green (wk), Ruben Trumpelmann, Malan Kruger, Ben Shikongo, Bernard Scholtz, Max Heingo.

Quick take
• India field three left-arm options (Arshdeep, Axar, Dube) plus Chakravarthy’s mystery spin.
• Namibia bank on Shikongo’s new-ball nip and Trumpelmann’s natural angle to prise out early wickets.
• Dew has influenced most evening matches here; Erasmus is betting on a repeat.

All set, then: a fresh-looking India against a Namibia side unafraid to shuffle its pack. First task for Samson and Kishan—negotiate the opening burst, give the in-form middle a platform, and maybe prove Aaron right in the process.
