Samson nudges into Orange Cap top five with crisp 87* in Delhi

Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 87 from 52 balls steered Chennai Super Kings past Delhi Capitals on Tuesday night and, almost as a bonus, pushed him into the IPL’s Orange Cap top five. Chasing 156 on a worn, slightly tacky surface in Delhi, the CSK opener looked unhurried while others fiddled about for timing. As television analyst Deep Dasgupta put it, “Samson was playing on a different surface.”

The numbers back that up. Samson now owns 402 runs in ten knocks, averaging 57.42 and striking at 167.50. Those returns edge him above Gujarat Titans’ B Sai Sudharsan and place him alongside KL Rahul, Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as the only men past 400 this season. With Sunrisers Hyderabad taking on Punjab Kings on Wednesday, both Abhishek and Klaasen have a live chance to snaffle top spot by week’s end.

Purple Cap business stayed quieter. Royal Challengers Bengaluru swing bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar still fronts that table on 17 wickets, narrowly ahead of Chennai’s Anshul Kamboj. Kagiso Rabada (16), Jofra Archer (15) and teenager Eshan Malinga (15) round out the leading pack. Kamboj, entrusted with every phase against Delhi, went wicket-less in his four overs – a small blip that hardly dents his overall campaign.

A couple of side notes for the stat-minded: tournament MVP calculations currently favour all-rounders contributing bulk overs, the best batting strike-rate still belongs to Klaasen, and Rahul’s fingertips remain safe as houses at cover with the season’s most catches. Plenty can change – history tells us the table tends to seesaw right through to the final week – but for now Samson’s silky knock has nudged the spotlight his way.
