Sciver-Brunt to miss New Zealand and India T20Is as calf takes longer to heal

Nat Sciver-Brunt will not feature in England’s six warm-up T20s against New Zealand and India, the ECB confirming on Tuesday that the captain needs “a longer period of rehabilitation” on the left-calf tear picked up for The Blaze last month.

England play New Zealand at Derby on Wednesday, then two more matches before India arrive; all six were pencilled in as the final tune-up for July’s home T20 World Cup. With Sciver-Brunt still in the treatment room, off-spinner Charlie Dean continues as stand-in skipper, just as she did in the 1-1 drawn ODI series against New Zealand.

The setback leaves Sciver-Brunt facing what one ECB medic called “a tight turnaround” to be fully fit for the global tournament. The same calf strain forced her out of the recent ODIs, and team staff feel another fortnight on the park would be pushing it.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge is also unavailable this week as she prepares for the birth of her first child. “Family comes first – the group is right behind her,” Dean said after training on Monday.

Maia Bouchier, fresh from a punchy 59 at Chester-le-Street, keeps her place in the enlarged squad, while 19-year-old Charis Pavely is promoted once more after a productive Metro Bank One-Day Cup – two hundreds and three fifties in eight knocks turning a few heads. “She’s earned a look-in,” batting coach Gareth Breese noted.

England’s injury list is unhelpfully long. Quick Mahika Gaur remains out with a foot fracture, seamer Em Arlott is following concussion protocols, and Issy Wong – who tweaked a hamstring in the ODI warm-up – is available again but being “managed carefully”, according to head coach Jon Lewis.

Sciver-Brunt’s own workload has been closely monitored for 12 months. She did not bowl last summer as she sorted a troublesome Achilles, the ECB betting that a fully-functioning all-rounder in a World Cup year is worth the cautious approach. For now that bet holds, but the calendar is starting to squeeze.

England squad v New Zealand (T20Is): Charlie Dean (capt), Alice Capsey, Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Heather Knight, Amy Jones (wk), Sophie Ecclestone, Sarah Glenn, Issy Wong, Danielle Gibson, Freya Kemp, Lauren Filer, Charis Pavely.

Fixtures: 1st T20I, Derby, Wed; 2nd T20I, Worcester, Fri; 3rd T20I, Hove, Sun. Three against India follow.

Sciver-Brunt’s absence is plainly a blow, yet England insist a fully refreshed captain is the bigger prize. As Lewis put it: “We want her peaking in July, not limping through June.”
