India are set to announce their squad for the upcoming five-Test series in England, starting 20 June. However, fast bowler Mohammed Shami may miss out due to concerns about his readiness for the rigours of Test cricket. Despite playing in the Indian Premier League for Sunrisers Hyderabad, it appears Shami has not yet built up the necessary workload following his injuries.
A BCCI medical team member recently visited Lucknow to assess Shami’s fitness. Although he is actively participating in the IPL, uncertainties about his ability to handle extended bowling spells in Tests have emerged. This assessment is crucial as the selectors deliberate on whether to err on the side of caution unless a positive report from medical staff is received.
Since his ankle surgery in February 2024, Shami, now 34, has also experienced knee issues. These have impeded his preparations, although they haven’t completely sidelined him. “It’s like a toddler learning to walk,” Shami remarked during his recovery, revealing his fears that the injuries might prematurely end his career. Yet, he proved his prowess in India’s Champions Trophy triumph earlier this year.
Despite making a limited-overs return against England in January, Shami’s form in the 2025 IPL season has been underwhelming. With just nine matches to his name, he has taken six wickets with an average of 56.16 and an economy rate of 11.23, causing concern for the selectors.
If Shami is excluded from the squad, potential replacements include Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, and Arshdeep Singh among others. The official announcement regarding India’s squad for the England Tests is anticipated this Saturday.
