Shoulder stress fracture rules Will Sutherland out of Yorkshire return

Will Sutherland’s planned second spell with Yorkshire has ended before it began. The Victorian all-rounder, who captains both Victoria and Melbourne Renegades, has been diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right shoulder and will miss the entire Vitality Blast campaign as well as two early-season County Championship fixtures.

“The Yorkshire County Cricket Club can confirm that Will Sutherland will no longer be joining the club for this year’s Vitality Blast, due to injury,” a club spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo. “News on any replacement will be communicated in due course. Everyone at Yorkshire CCC wishes him well as he starts his recovery.”

Sutherland featured in three Championship matches and a dozen Blast games for the White Rose last summer, earning a reputation as a “hugely popular” member of the dressing-room, according to general manager Gavin Hamilton. His aggressive seam bowling and lower-order hitting offered balance Yorkshire have struggled to find in the short format.

The setback leaves Yorkshire’s T20 plans looking threadbare only weeks before the Blast begins. Fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq pulled out last week with his own injury; Pakistan seamer Hasan Ali has stepped in, while Netherlands all-rounder Logan van Beek has been added as a second overseas option. Even so, head coach Anthony McGrath must now revisit the side’s blend.

Yorkshire have refreshed their squad for 2026. Moeen Ali has arrived on a T20-only deal, while Australian pair Sam Whiteman and AJ Tye – both dual Big Bash League winners with Perth Scorchers – qualify as local players thanks to UK passports. The theory was that Sutherland would provide extra pace and batting depth; the reality is an urgent search for cover just as practice blocks begin.

The club’s recent T20 record underlines the size of the task. Yorkshire have never lifted the Blast and have reached Finals Day – the competition’s semi-final and final staged on one weekend – only three times in 23 attempts. Last year they finished eighth in the nine-team North Group, losing nine of 14 matches.

Red-ball form has offered little comfort. A draw at Glamorgan was followed by a heavy home defeat to Hampshire. McGrath spoke of “changes” afterwards, and England pair Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow are due to bolster the line-up against Sussex this Friday, Bairstow having shaken off a minor thumb injury.

For Sutherland, the focus switches to rehabilitation in Melbourne. Yorkshire, meanwhile, must plug another gap before a season that already looks awkwardly fragile.
