Shreyas Iyer has been allowed to leave St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney after suffering a lacerated spleen during the third ODI against Australia on 25 October. The India batter, who had internal bleeding after the fall, “is now stable and recovering well,” according to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
“The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested following a minor procedure. He has undergone appropriate medical management for the same,” Saikia said in a statement on Saturday. “He is now stable and recovering well. The BCCI medical team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his recovery, and he has been discharged from the hospital today.”
Key facts first. Iyer’s issue flared when he sprinted back from point and held a high catch to remove Alex Carey. He landed heavily, clutched his ribs at once and signalled for help. Medical staff moved him off the field; he played no further part in the match, which India won by nine wickets but still lost the series 2-1.
Dr Koroush Haghighi and his Sydney team handled the emergency care, liaising with Mumbai-based orthopaedic specialist Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala. Iyer will remain in Sydney for follow-up checks and will only fly home when cleared.
The broader picture. India trail 1-0 in the ongoing T20I series that followed the ODIs, and Iyer’s absence stretches an already thin middle order. Recovery from a spleen injury can vary—anything from four to eight weeks, sometimes longer if complications set in—so selectors may need alternate plans for the New Zealand home series pencilled in for December. That said, the timeline remains fluid.
Physically, the spleen is tricky; it filters blood and helps fight infection, so caution is standard. One board medical insider put it plainly off the record: minor setbacks are common, and a premature flight could risk another bleed.
For Iyer, it’s another unwanted break after last year’s back stress fracture. Yet teammates feel he will return without fuss. “He’s a tough lad and knows rehab routines inside-out,” one senior India player remarked after Friday’s training.
All in all, encouraging news for India and for Iyer himself, though nobody is putting an exact date on his comeback just yet.
