Tim Southee is back in purple and gold, though this time the New Zealander will be holding a clipboard rather than the new ball. Kolkata Knight Riders confirmed on Friday that the former quick has accepted a two-year deal as bowling coach, filling the vacancy left by Bharat Arun’s switch to Lucknow Super Giants.
“We are delighted to welcome Tim Southee back to the KKR family, this time in a coaching capacity,” chief executive Venky Mysore said. “Tim’s vast experience and technical expertise will be instrumental in shaping our bowling unit. His leadership qualities and calm approach make him an ideal mentor for our young bowlers.”
Southee, who called time on his playing career in early 2024 and has since worked with England in a consultancy role, described the new post as a natural fit. “KKR has always felt like home to me, and it’s an honour to return in this new role,” he said. “The franchise has an incredible culture, passionate fans, and a great group of players. I look forward to working closely with the bowlers and helping the team achieve success in IPL 2026.”
Those bowlers will be guided by an overhauled back-room staff. Abhishek Nayar heads the set-up, Shane Watson joins as assistant coach, and Dwayne Bravo continues as team mentor. Spin coach Carl Crowe follows Arun to Lucknow, while Ottis Gibson departs after a single season.
From a purely statistical view, Southee’s own IPL record—31 wickets in 43 outings—will not be pinned on any changing-room wall. Even so, team insiders point to the nine-match burst in 2022, when the seamer claimed 14 wickets for Kolkata, as evidence of how his disciplined method can translate to crowded schedules and shifting pitches. The franchise is banking on that know-how rubbing off on a youthful attack still working out how to defend totals at Eden Gardens.
Former team-mate Venkatesh Iyer offered a quick endorsement. “Tim always had a word for the younger lads and never complicated things,” he said informally. “I can already see the boys picking his brains about bowling at the death.”
With auction plans already under way, Southee’s first real test will arrive long before the 2026 season starts. He is expected to play a central role in identifying local fast-bowling options, an area where KKR felt thin last year. Whether that search uncovers the next star or merely strengthens the squad’s depth, the franchise believe their quietly spoken coach can help turn promise into points.
