Matheesha Pathirana’s calf problem ended his World Cup, prompting Dilshan Madushanka’s late call-up. He walks straight into the XI, as does Pramod Madushan, already part of the squad but yet to play a game. To squeeze them both in, Sri Lanka have rested spearhead Dushmantha Chameera. Coach Chris Silverwood said on local radio, “Dilshan’s been bowling quickly in the nets, and we need him match-ready for the Super Eights.”
Zimbabwe, unbeaten and fresh from that upset of Australia, have stuck with the side that delivered. Captain Sikandar Raza outlined their thinking: “Conditions under lights have been friendlier for batting all week, so we were happy to bowl first if we lost the toss.” Forecast drizzle could yet vindicate him.
Both nations are already assured of Super Eight spots, but the meeting still carries weight: Sri Lanka want clarity on their pace pecking order; Zimbabwe are chasing momentum and a little more respect from opponents who, historically, have offered them few favours.
The pitch has played true so far, although late-evening dew has pushed scores north of 170. Anything similar should test Zimbabwe’s middle order again, while giving Sri Lanka’s new-look seam trio a first live workout.
