Paul Stirling’s T20 World Cup has ended two matches early. The Ireland skipper damaged ligaments in his right knee while diving to catch Josh Inglis against Australia on 11 February, and the medical team have now confirmed he will play no further part in the tournament. Uncapped left-hander Sam Topping has been drafted in and is available for Saturday’s fixture with Oman in Colombo, followed by Zimbabwe in Pallekele on 17 February.
Stirling tried to battle on, walking out to open Ireland’s chase of 183, but it was clear something was wrong. He faced one delivery, set off for a single, and hobbled straight back to the dressing-room. Without their most experienced batter, Ireland slipped to a 67-run defeat – a result that leaves no margin for error in the remaining group games.
Coach Gary Wilson sounded pessimistic immediately after the incident. “doesn’t look great,” he admitted, before expanding: “He went for a scan this evening, so we’ll have to wait for confirmation. He thought he was okay when he went out there to bat. He wasn’t going to go out if he didn’t think he was right. He was trying to maximise the powerplay, basically. He was trying to take off for a single, but clearly the knee seized up even more.”
Topping, 20, has never worn an Ireland shirt at senior level but has been on the radar since an eye-catching domestic season. In 12 career T20s he has scored 374 runs at an average of 34.00 and a strike rate of 134.05, with four half-centuries. The selectors value his ability to clear the in-field early – a trait they will miss from Stirling – and his calm approach against spin, a likely factor on sub-continental pitches.
From a tactical point of view, Andrew Balbirnie is expected to reclaim the captaincy, while the management must decide whether to slot Topping straight into the top three or shuffle George Dockrell up the order. Either way, Ireland need quick answers: two wins are essential if they are to keep their quarter-final hopes alive.
Stirling remains with the squad for moral support, though travel home for surgery has not been ruled out. For now, the focus shifts to Topping – a rookie handed a daunting yet potentially career-defining opportunity.
