Sutherland Rested, Wilson Called Up for Australia’s Caribbean Trip

Australia will head to the West Indies later this month without all-rounder Annabel Sutherland, the selectors opting for rest after her heavy workload against India. Captain Sophie Molineux, still easing a sore back, is in the squad and “expected to be available to play,” though she may be managed across the six-match tour.

“Annabel will miss the series as part of a proactive management plan after a significant workload over the past 12 months, and we believe the extended rest will help ensure she’s at her best ahead of the World Cup,” national selector Shawn Flegler explained. Sutherland’s absence is precautionary: she struck a fine Test century at the WACA and collected six wickets but has not stopped since last year’s ODI World Cup and WBBL.

For Molineux, this is the first tour as full-time captain across formats after Alyssa Healy’s retirement. The new skipper sat out the closing stages of the India series yet is, according to medical staff, on track for the three T20Is that open the trip. The one-dayers, carrying ICC Women’s Championship points, follow in St Kitts.

Flegler framed the tour as the start of something fresh. “Being the final series before the T20 World Cup, it’s a great opportunity for the group to refine our plans against a challenging opposition,” he said. “This tour marks the beginning of a new era for the side, with Sophie taking the reins across all formats and a new-look batting line-up following Alyssa’s retirement.”

He added: “Sophie was terrific during the recent T20 series against India and has already begun shaping her leadership style and this tour will be another important step in continuing to define how she wants to lead the side.” Should the back flare up, vice-captains Ashleigh Gardner and Tahlia McGrath are next in line.

New South Wales wicketkeeper Tahlia Wilson, fresh from a productive WNCL season, receives her first international call-up as cover for Beth Mooney. Wilson will join the party after the state final on 21 March. At the other end of the experience scale, Grace Harris has been left out but, Flegler stressed, remains “firmly in the picture” for the T20 World Cup.

Left-arm quick Lucy Hamilton, outstanding on Test debut in Perth, is tipped for her first T20I cap. “We’re really pleased with how well Lucy has transitioned to international cricket, she’s had a staggered introduction and we expect she’ll get an opportunity to show what she can do in the T20 format as well,” Flegler said. Nicola Carey keeps her place after a solid return in India, while Kim Garth has shaken off a quad strain.

The schedule originally included a Test – West Indies’ first against Australia in half a century – but that idea was shelved. Even so, the tour offers a final competitive tune-up before the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh later in the year and, just as importantly, Women’s Championship points that affect 50-over World Cup qualification.

A quieter tour on paper, perhaps, yet one laden with small sub-plots: a fresh captain finding her feet, new names vying for World Cup tickets, and a rested match-winner waiting in the wings.
