Tamim Iqbal elected unopposed as Bangladesh Cricket Board president

Tamim Iqbal will lead the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for the next four years after Sunday’s election in Dhaka returned him as the only candidate. The former national captain had already spent two months in the chair as head of an ad-hoc committee, appointed when the previous board was dissolved in April.

“It’s an honour to serve the game in a different capacity,” Tamim told reporters at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. “My playing days shaped my views; now the challenge is to translate those ideas into policy.”

The government-mandated poll combined physical ballots and an e-voting system. Eighty-eight votes were cast to choose 23 directors across three categories, with two further members later nominated by the sports ministry to complete the 25-strong board.

How the votes fell
• Category 1 – regional divisions and districts: ten directors elected.
• Category 2 – Dhaka-based clubs: twelve directors, including Tamim.
• Category 3 – former cricketers, educational bodies and others: one director.

Veteran administrator Fahim Sinha was confirmed as one of two vice-presidents; the second post remains open. Sinha said, “We have plenty to do, from domestic scheduling to player welfare. Continuity and transparency must be our watch-words.”

Tamim’s playing résumé is well known: 391 internationals, more than 15,000 runs and 21 victories as captain across formats, notably a 2–1 one-day success in South Africa four years ago. A heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League fixture in 2025 curtailed his domestic career and accelerated his shift towards administration.

Analyst Roqibul Hasan believes Tamim’s profile may help bridge a long-standing gap between the dressing-room and the boardroom. “Players trust him because he has been there,” Hasan said. “But the board is a different arena – consensus-building will be vital.”

The election ends a turbulent spell that began with the previous vote, on 6 October last year. Then-president Aminul Islam retained office amid claims from Tamim’s camp of “bias and malpractice”. Government intervention followed, prompting the interim administration and, ultimately, Sunday’s ballot.

Directors by category
Category 1: Sayeed Bin Zaman, Abdullah Al Fuad, Minhajul Abedin, Moyeen Uddin Chowdhury, Shantanu Islam, Shafiqul Alam, Mizanur Rahman, Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury, Shakrul Alam, Faisal Amin.
Category 2: Tamim Iqbal, Fahim Sinha, Asif Rabbani, Israfil Khasru, Dr Sarkar Mahbub Ahmed, Masuduzzaman, Rafiqul Islam, Sakeef Ahmed, Shanian Taneem, Syed Ibrahim Ahmed, Yasir Abbas, Yasir Faisal.
Category 3: Sirajuddin Alamgir.
Government nominees: Ruhul Amin, Sarfaraz Ahmed.

Immediate tasks
1. Appointing the second vice-president and key committee chairs.
2. Finalising the domestic fixtures list, delayed by the administrative reshuffle.
3. Negotiating player retainers, due for renewal next month.

Former selector Habibul Bashar welcomed the fresh start but warned against complacency. “Governance issues have dogged us for years,” he said. “The new board must prove it can act rather than react.”

Observers note that Tamim’s willingness to criticise board processes while still a player sets a clear expectation of reform. Whether that translates into smoother relations with clubs, sponsors and the international calendar will become evident over the next few months.

For now, Bangladesh cricket enters another cycle with a familiar face at the helm and no shortage of work on the agenda.
