Thailand, Malaysia and China book Asian Games berths in women’s cricket

Thailand, Malaysia and China have confirmed their places at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya after finishing in the top three of last week’s qualifying tournament in Kuala Lumpur.

The six-day qualifier (26-31 May) opened with round-robin group matches. Thailand led Group A with wins against Malaysia and Hong Kong, while Nepal topped Group B ahead of China. Semi-final victories for Thailand, by 83 runs over China, and for Malaysia, who chased Nepal’s 126 for six with two wickets and eight deliveries in hand, settled two of the three available spots: both finalists advanced automatically.

That left Sunday’s third-place play-off as the decisive fixture. Rain shortened the contest, bringing the DLS method into play, and China held their nerve to beat Nepal by five wickets, claiming the final ticket to Japan. Later the same afternoon Thailand rounded off the tournament by skittling Malaysia for 54 and cruising to a nine-wicket win, though that result had no bearing on qualification.

Thailand’s progress comes as little surprise. The side, ranked 12th in the ICC women’s T20I standings, have been a leading Associate nation for several seasons and appeared at the 2020 T20 World Cup in Australia. Malaysia sit 28th and China 42nd, yet both showed enough composure in Kuala Lumpur’s humid late-May conditions to extend their seasons into the autumn.

“We came here knowing anything less than qualification would feel like a failure,” Thailand captain Naruemol Chaiwai said afterwards. “Getting the job done early let us play the final with clear minds.”

Malaysia coach Rumeli Dhar, while disappointed by the final-day collapse, stressed the bigger picture. “The objective was a ticket to the Games and the players achieved that,” she noted. “There’s work to do, of course, but we’ve earned the right to keep improving on a major stage.”

China’s head coach Zhang Chan added: “Qualifiers are always tense. The rain delay added to it, yet the group handled the pressure well.”

Women’s cricket at the Asian Games will feature eight teams in the T20 format. Full Members Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka qualify automatically, as do hosts Japan, leaving the three qualifier spots now filled. Match schedules are expected later in the summer.

Attention now turns to the men’s pathway event. Japan qualify as hosts and will be joined directly by Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, with four further places to be decided among Nepal, China, Malaysia, Qatar, Bahrain, Hong Kong, Oman and Singapore.

For the three newly qualified women’s sides, September cannot come soon enough. As Chaiwai put it, “We’ve shown we belong on this stage; now we aim to prove it again in Japan.”
