Tim Boon, who has previously coached Leicestershire and the England Under-19s, has joined Sri Lanka Cricket as a consultant for a month-long stint, starting on 8th May. His expertise will be focused on the senior and A-team women’s squads, the men’s emerging team, and the Sri Lanka Under-17s, enhancing their batting skills.
During his tenure with England, Boon was notably the team analyst for Duncan Fletcher during the 2005 Ashes triumph. Now, he’s set to lead “technical and tactical sessions aimed at improving the players’ overall batting approach and individual performance,” according to a Sri Lanka Cricket press release.
Boon’s appointment follows a similar stint by India’s ex-fielding coach, R Sridhar, who earlier this month conducted an extensive 10-day fielding programme for Sri Lanka’s top men’s and women’s players.
This move is consistent with Sri Lanka Cricket’s strategy of engaging international coaching experts on short-term contracts to boost performance. Last year saw Zubin Bharucha, the high-performance director for Rajasthan Royals, oversee a brief programme to elevate batting standards in Sri Lanka. Other big names like Wasim Akram and Jonty Rhodes have also contributed to specific training programmes in the past decade.
Boon’s involvement underscores Sri Lanka’s commitment to nurturing cricketing talent with diverse, expert insights, continuing its trend of blending global experience into local coaching structures.
