Titans bowl first in Ahmedabad, Sindhu handed debut

Shubman Gill called correctly on a warm Ahmedabad afternoon and, without hesitation, asked Punjab Kings to bat. “A little grass, a black-soil base – there should be help early,” the Gujarat Titans skipper told the host broadcaster, keeping his explanation typically short.

Gill’s decision means a first IPL outing for 20-year-old left-arm-spinning all-rounder Nishant Sindhu, a member of India’s 2022 Under-19 World-Cup-winning side. Sindhu replaces the mis-firing M Shahrukh Khan, who drops out of the XI and the five-man Impact list. Rahul Tewatia, so often GT’s late-innings safety blanket, is expected to come in when a chase takes shape.

Punjab Kings, still top of the table despite last week’s seven-wicket defeat by Rajasthan Royals, tweak their seam attack: Australian quick Xavier Bartlett returns for Lockie Ferguson. Coach Trevor Bayliss hinted at the switch yesterday, noting, “We’ve tried to keep everyone fresh, and Bartlett’s extra bounce could be handy here.” Vijaykumar Vyshak stays on the Impact bench and is likely to share the new ball once Kings defend.

Shashank Singh’s side strain persists, so Suryansh Shedge keeps his middle-order berth. Captain Shreyas Iyer played down the absence. “We’ve covered that role pretty well; the energy in the group is still excellent,” he said.

Table mathematics
Punjab’s 13 points from eight matches give them a narrow cushion, but defeat tonight would pack the top half even tighter – Titans could join a four-way logjam on 12 points. Analyst Lisa Sthalekar summed it up neatly: “One result here flips the whole playoff picture.”

Pitch and conditions
Motera’s black-soil track generally slows under lights; early juice for quicks is the main reason to field first. Dew has been patchy this season, so chasing is not automatically simpler, yet both camps were happy enough to follow the standard T20 playbook.

Squads
Gujarat Titans: Shubman Gill (capt), Sai Sudharsan, Jos Buttler (wk), Nishant Sindhu, Washington Sundar, Jason Holder, Rashid Khan, Arshad Khan, Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, Manav Suthar.
Impact options: Rahul Tewatia, Glenn Phillips, Anuj Rawat, Kumar Kushagra, Kulwant Kejroliya.

Punjab Kings: Prabhsimran Singh (wk), Priyansh Arya, Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer (capt), Suryansh Shedge, Nehal Wadhera, Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal.
Impact options: Harpreet Brar, Vishnu Vinod, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Musheer Khan, Mitchell Owen.

Key match-ups to watch
• Rabada v Connolly – South African pace against a left-hander who likes width.
• Rashid v Stoinis – the leg-spinner has dismissed the Australian three times in T20s; Stoinis needs to break the pattern.
• Chahal v Buttler – former Rajasthan team-mates know each other’s tricks.

What they said
Gill: “We back ourselves chasing at home; it’s as simple as that.”
Iyer: “Another opportunity to put points on the board – nothing changes for us.”

With a debutant eager, leaders under scrutiny and the table poised, it feels like one of those mid-season nights that sets the tone for the run-in.
