Warwickshire have moved quickly to strengthen their spin options, agreeing a Vitality Blast deal with Pakistan’s Usman Tariq that will also dovetail neatly with his Hundred commitments at Edgbaston.
The 28-year-old mystery spinner is expected to be available for the entire Blast campaign before switching dressing-rooms – not grounds – to join Birmingham Phoenix in July. It is his first taste of county cricket, although a busy winter circuit that has included the PSL, CPL, ILT20 and Abu Dhabi T10 means English conditions should not feel entirely alien.
Tariq’s rise has been brisk. Less than two years separate his senior T20 debut and a Pakistan cap, and nine internationals have already produced 18 wickets at 11.16 with an economy of 6.66. The armoury features off-breaks, googlies and a flicked leg-break, all delivered after that noticeable mid-run pause that tends to unsettle batters.
James Thomas, Warwickshire’s performance director, welcomed the signing, saying: “Usman is exactly the type of high-impact player we want to bring into Warwickshire, so we’re delighted to get this deal completed. His skill set and tactical awareness make him a genuine threat in modern white-ball cricket, but it’s his hunger to compete and continually improve that really stands out.
“What makes this signing particularly exciting is the alignment between Warwickshire and Birmingham Phoenix. Bringing Usman into the Bears for the Vitality Blast, before transitioning into the Hundred with the Phoenix, reflects the strength of our integrated model across club and franchise.”
Explaining the wider thinking, Thomas added: “It allows us to create continuity for the player, maximise performance impact across both competitions, and build stronger connections with our supporters in Birmingham and Warwickshire. Ultimately, this is about strengthening the team, the franchise, and our presence in the area and we believe Usman can play a key role in that this summer.”
Tariq sounded equally upbeat. “I am very excited to bring more fun and energy to the Bears. I can’t wait to get involved with the squad and it’s a great feeling to be part of this team. I hope to see as many people as possible at Edgbaston this summer.”
Warwickshire do need a spark after last year’s quarter-final defeat by Somerset. Moeen Ali has since moved to Yorkshire and, while all-rounder Jordan Thompson has arrived, Tariq and fellow overseas recruit Beau Webster will be central to any push for a first Blast title since 2014.
How quickly Tariq translates his franchise success to English pitches may well decide whether that wait continues.
