West Indies have unveiled their squad for the upcoming ODI series in Ireland and England, with notable consistency in selection. The only notable absentee from the team that achieved recent victories over Bangladesh and England is Shimron Hetmyer, who is currently participating in the IPL. Jewel Andrew rejoins the squad, which includes 15 players in total.
The side will be led by Shai Hope, with Brandon King and Evin Lewis expected to open the batting. Keacy Carty is anticipated to follow at the top order. Both Shamar Joseph and Matthew Forde, who missed the Bangladesh series, return to action. Amir Jangoo aspires for more opportunities after impressively scoring a hundred in just 79 balls on debut against St Kitts.
The series against Ireland commences on 21st May in Dublin. West Indies, placed ninth in the ICC’s ODI rankings, aim to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa and Zimbabwe, following their strong performances at the end of 2024.
“These matches form a critical component towards the 2027 World Cup and there are signs of the team building consistency following the series sweep against Bangladesh and the win over England late last year,” remarked West Indies head coach Daren Sammy. “We expect the conditions to be challenging but we are creating a culture and mindset which emphasise playing the brand of cricket that is taking us closer to some of our overall objectives.”
In a coaching shuffle, Ravi Rampaul steps in as the new bowling coach, succeeding James Franklin. Additionally, Kevin O’Brien, once an allrounder for Ireland, joins the coaching team for the Ireland series.
After completing their stint at Clontarf Cricket Club with three matches, the team will head to England for another three ODIs, kicking off at Edgbaston on 29th May. The series in England will conclude with three T20 internationals, with the squad for these matches yet to be announced.
