Kane Williamson will again wear Durban’s Super Giants colours this summer, stepping in for the unavailable Taijul Islam after the Bangladesh left-arm spinner was ruled out of the fourth SA20.
Durban had secured Taijul for R500,000 (about US$28,800) at September’s auction, confident his orthodox spin would balance a pace-heavy attack. A late change of plans – the franchise has not given details – left the management searching for a replacement. Williamson was the obvious call.
The New Zealand captain topped Durban’s run chart last season with 233 runs from eight innings, averaging 46.60 and scoring at a strike rate of 118.87, yet was still released when squads were trimmed. Durban finished bottom and have since admitted they “misread the balance of the side”.
Williamson’s return continues a busy freelance schedule. In October he became Lucknow Super Giants’ strategic adviser in the IPL. He also sampled the Hundred for the first time, re-entered the Vitality Blast after seven years away, and accepted only a casual contract with New Zealand Cricket so he could, in his words, “keep options open”. Last week he retired from T20 internationals, a move designed to ease workload before the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Durban’s head coach Lance Klusener believes Williamson’s calm will help a youthful squad. “The numbers speak for themselves but it’s the way he organises a chase that excites us,” Klusener said.
Analytically, the fit is clear. Durban already have leg-spinner Noor Ahmad retained, while Sunil Narine’s off-spin offers variety. Losing Taijul removes the only left-arm orthodox option, but Williamson strengthens a top order that struggled to bat through 20 overs. His strike rate is moderate by modern standards, yet the ability to bat deep should free hitters such as Jos Buttler to attack early.
The SA20 opens on Boxing Day, with Durban launching their campaign two days later at Kingsmead against MI Cape Town. Supporters will hope the familiar sight of Williamson at No.3 is the start of a better season.
