Zimbabwe Faces Setbacks in Upcoming Tests Against South Africa

Zimbabwe will enter their two-Test series against South Africa without key players Ben Curran and Richard Ngarava. The series begins on 28 June in Bulawayo. Opening batsman Curran is sidelined due to a broken finger—an injury inflicted by Kagiso Rabada during a warm-up game for the World Test Championship final at Arundel earlier this month. Meanwhile, fast bowler Ngarava is dealing with a lower back injury from their previous Test against England.

Vic Ngarava’s absence leaves a gap in the bowling attack, and the selection seeks to adapt to the expected spin-friendly conditions in Bulawayo by omitting seamer Victor Nyauchi, who was part of the squad travelling to England. All-rounder Sikandar Raza is also unavailable due to commitments in the Major League Cricket (MLC).

Prince Masvaure will make his return to the side following Curran’s injury. Masvaure last featured in a Test against Ireland the previous year. Also rejoining the squad are top-order batsman Takudzwanashe Kaitano and leg-spinner Vincent Masekesa, who impressed with a five-wicket haul on his debut in Bangladesh. Trevor Gwandu returns after missing out due to a groin injury against England. Fast bowler Kundai Matigimu, aged 27, with only four first-class matches under his belt, may receive his first Test cap.

Under the leadership of Craig Ervine, Zimbabwe’s squad blends seasoned players like Sean Williams with younger talents. Blessing Muzarabani will spearhead the pace attack. Promising all-rounder Wessly Madhevere, at 24, aims to add to his six Test caps, while 21-year-old Brian Bennett, known for hitting the fastest century by a Zimbabwean in Tests, adds excitement to the team.

This series signals the start of an intensive period of home Test cricket for Zimbabwe. Following one game against Ireland earlier this year, they are set to host another six Tests in 2025. This includes the Tests against South Africa, a subsequent T20I tri-series involving New Zealand, and two Tests against New Zealand. Afghanistan will also visit later this year.

Squad: Craig Ervine (Captain), Brian Bennett, Tanaka Chivanga, Trevor Gwandu, Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Wessly Madhevere, Clive Madande, Vincent Masekesa, Wellington Masakadza, Prince Masvaure, Kundai Matigimu, Blessing Muzarabani, Newman Nyamhuri, Tafadzwa Tsiga, Nicholas Welch, Sean Williams.
