Ishan Kishan seemed to be on a revival path in the IPL 2025 with a measured 44 off 34 balls, offering Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) a fighting chance against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). After a disappointing run of 33 runs across seven innings, this knock brought much-needed relief to Kishan and his team, who have struggled this season.
Kishan began the tournament with a spectacular century against Rajasthan Royals, sparking high expectations. However, subsequent performances fell short with unfortunate dismissals and rash shots clouding his form.
In Friday’s match, pushed to the crease within the first over after Abhishek Sharma’s early departure, Kishan took a cautious approach, starting with 21 off 20 deliveries. His strategy paid off, setting a foundation for SRH’s win, only their third in a difficult nine-match series.
Analysing Kishan’s innings on ESPNcricinfo Time Out, Varun Aaron appreciated his controlled play. “If he gives himself time at the start, he can take it really deep,” Aaron noted. “He didn’t play anything rash initially. He assessed the wicket and built his innings from there.”
Aaron Finch agreed, highlighting Kishan’s tactical awareness. “His ability to read the situation and not overplay his hand early on was commendable,” Finch remarked. “Maximising the powerplay is tricky especially after an early wicket, but he assessed and played nicely.”
Although SRH secured the target in 18.4 overs, finishing with five wickets down, the victory was not commanding. Still, Aaron sees value in such gritty wins. “A win is a win,” he said. “Given where Sunrisers were, they’d gladly take this victory. Even with key players like Abhishek, Head, and Klaasen not performing, Kishan’s contribution and Nitish Kumar Reddy finishing it off were significant.”
Such hard-fought victories could instil confidence in SRH, known for their more dominant wins. “They are used to bulldozing their opponents. Winning scrappy games like this could be vital for them,” Aaron observed. “It’s not just about thrashing teams in ten or 11 overs. This win should reassure them that they can tough out games too.”
With Kishan showing signs of his former self, SRH might find some momentum for the remainder of the tournament.
