Gill cleared for South Africa T20Is, confirms Gambhir

Shubman Gill is set to walk straight back into India’s T20 side next week after recovering from the neck problem that forced him off the field in Kolkata last month. Head coach Gautam Gambhir told reporters the opener is “fit and fine and ready to go”, ending any lingering doubt about his availability.

Gill’s injury – believed to be a pinched nerve picked up while ducking under a bouncer – initially carried a five-week recovery window. He spent most of that time at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru rather than travelling with the squad, a decision the management felt would “speed things up” according to back-room staff. The plan appears to have worked.

India wrapped up the ODI leg against South Africa 2-1 on Saturday, after which Gambhir added: “yes, Shubhman is ready to start. That’s why he has been selected. And obviously he is fit and fine, hungry to go.” Simple words but a clear message – the 26-year-old will reclaim the spot temporarily filled by Yashasvi Jaiswal, who struck a maiden century in Visakhapatnam.

Gill’s return means an old partnership with Abhishek Sharma is back on the cards. The two have opened together since India Under-19 days, and coaches believe their contrasting tempos can unsettle new-ball attacks. Whether that clicks immediately in Cuttack on 9 December is another question, yet it does give the batting order a familiar shape.

The selectors have also recalled Hardik Pandya, whose ankle kept him out for two months. Getting overs out of the all-rounder remains a priority, especially with the T20 World Cup only half a year away. Fitness permitting, he slots into a middle order already overseen by stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav; Gill will be vice-captain for this five-match series.

Pandya’s return pushes Shivam Dube down the pecking order, but the left-hander is still in the squad and may get a look if conditions demand an extra hitter. On the bowling side, Jasprit Bumrah leads a pace unit that includes Arshdeep Singh and uncapped quick Harshit Rana, with Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy offering contrasting spin options.

Fixtures: 9 Dec Cuttack, 11 Dec New Chandigarh, 14 Dec Dharamsala, 17 Dec Lucknow, 19 Dec Ahmedabad. All matches are night games.

India squad: Suryakumar Yadav (capt), Shubman Gill (vc), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Washington Sundar.

A familiar core, a few returning faces, and a fully fit Gill at the top – not a bad way for India to start their countdown to another global tournament.
