Kings choose to chase; debuts for Ashok Sharma and Cooper Connolly

Punjab Kings won the toss in New Chandigarh and, without much hesitation, asked Gujarat Titans to bat first. “We noticed that chasing sides came out on top in every warm-up here,” captain Shreyas Iyer explained at the toss, so the decision felt logical rather than adventurous.

Two fresh faces step straight into the spotlight. For Punjab, 20-year-old Western Australian Cooper Connolly receives his first IPL cap and is pencilled in at No. 3. Titans hand a debut to quick bowler Ashok Sharma, while New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips turns out for the franchise for the first time after switching teams in the auction.

Punjab rely on a quartet of overseas options: Connolly, Marco Jansen, Marcus Stoinis and Xavier Bartlett. Priyansh Arya has been kept back as a possible Impact substitute, most likely to open if required. Gujarat respond with Jos Buttler behind the stumps, Rashid Khan, Kagiso Rabada and Phillips as their international group, leaving out Jason Holder on this occasion.

Those choices hint at contrasting blueprints. PBKS lean towards all-round depth, Titans stick with extra pace. Analyst Rohan Patel reckons the surface, rolled evenly on the eve of the match, “should skid on early and slow up after lights”, so Iyer’s preference to chase may be vindicated if dew appears.

Playing XIs

Punjab Kings: Prabhsimran Singh (wk), Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer (capt), Nehal Wadhera, Shashank Singh, Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, Vyshak Vijaykumar, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal. Impact subs: Vishnu Vinod, Suyansh Shedge, Harpreet Brar, Praveen Dubey, Priyansh Arya.

Gujarat Titans: Shubman Gill (capt), Sai Sudharsan, Jos Buttler (wk), Washington Sundar, Glenn Phillips, Shahrukh Khan, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Kagiso Rabada, Ashok Sharma, Mohammed Siraj. Impact subs: Jayant Yadav, Manav Suthar, Prasidh Krishna, Kumar Kushagra, Jason Holder.

With both sides already tucked in the mid-table cluster, tonight offers a chance to break stride. A calm start, rather than fireworks, might be the smarter route on a pitch expected to tighten later. Still, as Titans coach Ashish Kapoor put it, “Debutants often bring surprise value—you can’t plan for what you haven’t seen.”
