Litchfield back, Australia bat first; Ismail returns for South Africa

Old Trafford – Australia won the toss and, without much fuss, decided to have first use of a worn strip in their opening Women’s T20 World Cup match against South Africa. The call meant Phoebe Litchfield, passed fit after a niggling quad strain, walked straight into an XI stacked with all-rounders and spin.

Australia’s thinking was plain: four front-line spinners – Alana King, captain Sophie Molineux, Georgia Wareham and Ashleigh Gardner – plus four seam options. King’s numbers against South Africa in ODIs (15 wickets at 8.26 from five games) were hard to ignore, so she kept her place. Molineux noted pre-game that “bowling in the fourth innings might suit us”, hinting at expected grip for the slow bowlers later on.

Litchfield’s recovery mattered. She missed the last warm-up but moved freely in training and slots in at No. 3, between Georgia Voll and Ellyse Perry. The rest of the order is the usual blend of power and versatility: Gardner, Wareham, Annabel Sutherland and Nicola Carey can all clear the ropes or send down overs.

South Africa’s main headline was familiar yet still welcome: Shabnim Ismail, the side’s quickest bowler, is back in green. She shelved retirement only weeks ago and walks straight into a seam attack also featuring Ayabonga Khaka and Nadine de Klerk. Former captain Dane van Niekerk and opener Tazmin Brits, though, were left out – a brave call given their experience. All-rounder Annerie Dercksen is bumped up to No. 3, with Marizanne Kapp one place lower and Sune Luus opening next to captain Laura Wolvaardt. In all, South Africa list nine bowling options, five of them pace.

The pitch, used earlier when Scotland chalked up their maiden World Cup win, sits more or less in the middle of the square: one side is 60 metres, the other 61, so no obvious short boundary. History offers only loose guidance – the teams have not met in a T20I since Australia ended South Africa’s run in the 2024 semi-final – but memory of King’s 7 for 19 in last year’s ODI World Cup lingers.
