Kolkata Knight Riders will have to make do without Akash Deep this season after the right-arm seamer was unable to shake off a lower-back stress injury. Medical staff estimate he needs roughly another three months’ rest, ruling him out of the 2026 IPL in its entirety.
“He’s coming along, just not quickly enough for the tournament,” KKR head physio Andrew Leipus said. “Akash is targeting a full fitness test in June, so we couldn’t take the gamble.”
Deep spent the build-up at the BCCI Centre of Excellence rather than at KKR’s pre-season camp, and his absence stretches an already thin pace unit. Harshit Rana is also struggling with a side strain and is “all but ruled out,” according to an assistant coach, while Sri Lanka’s Matheesha Pathirana is expected to sit out at least the first fortnight.
Blessing Muzarabani has already come in for Mustafizur Rahman, yet beyond that the cupboard looks a touch bare. Domestic options currently amount to Vaibhav Arora, Umran Malik and Kartik Tyagi, with Australia’s Cameron Green able to chip in as a seam-bowling all-rounder.
Head coach Chandrakant Pandit remained measured. “You can’t control injuries,” he said. “What we can control is preparation. We’ve invited a handful of uncapped quicks for a trial this week and will finalise a replacement for Harshit if required.”
From a tactical standpoint, KKR may have to lean harder on spin and Green’s overs until reinforcements arrive. On Eden Gardens’ true surface that isn’t the worst outcome, but it does leave little margin for further injuries. For now, the Knights will hope the mix of youth and experience can plug the gaps until Pathirana returns – and until Akash Deep is finally back to full tilt.
